Government and Civic Organizations See Crowdsourcing as Path to More Transparent Policy Development
Open innovation technology in demand by leaders seeking public engagement
CALGARY, August 13, 2009 – Interest in open innovation technology is growing from governments around the world, as forward-thinking leaders increasingly see the benefit of inviting citizens into policy making, and to show accountability in their operations and investment of tax dollars.
“During the last six months, we have seen an increasing number of inquiries from government and civic organizations for our Chaordix™ crowdsourcing platform and services and demand is on the rise, said Shelley Kuipers, CEO and President of Chaordix. “It’s grown to be a significant percentage of our overall inquires and we’re seeing interest from North America, South America and Europe.”
“Open Government” is a concept championed by US President Barack Obama and in an August 4, 2009 memo from the US White House to department and agency heads, government leaders are invited to take advantage of open innovation models and become highly open to ideas from many players in the pursuit of “transformational solutions” to the USA’s challenges.
Crowdsourcing can be applied for a wide variety of benefits for government, from gathering new ideas, to understanding what is on the minds of the electorate, to promoting grass-roots advocacy for key policy issues.
As more and more government and civic leaders internationally seek to understand and implement open innovation to address national issues, there has also been a rise in interest in crowdsourcing technology by innovation consultants who comprise 12% of sales interest seen in the last six months.
